H型钢是一种断面力学性能较工字钢优良的经济型断面钢材，因其断面的形状与英文字母“H”相同而得名。热轧H型钢的翼缘比工字钢宽、侧向刚度大、抗弯能力强。同等规格下H型钢理重较工字钢轻。

型材按断面尺寸可分为大型、中型和小型型材，其划分常以它们分别适合在大型、中型和小型轧机上轧制来分类。大型、中型和小型的区分实际上并不严格。另外还有用单重（kg/m）来区分的方法。按表面涂镀层分，有镀锌薄板、镀锡薄板、镀铅薄板、塑料复合钢板等。一般认为，单重在5 kg/m以下的是小型材，单重在5～20 kg/m的是中型材，单重超过20 kg/m的是大型材。因此又可以进一步分成凸缘型材、多台阶型材、宽薄型材、局部特殊加工型材、不规则曲线型材、复合型材、周期断面型材和金属丝材等等。

薄板的宽度为500~1500毫米；厚的宽度为600~3000毫米。薄板按钢种分，有普通钢、钢、合金钢、不锈钢、工具钢、耐热钢、轴承钢、硅钢和工业纯铁薄板等。
